What is a flue damper?

A flue damper is simply a plate with a spindle that fits inside your first piece of flue pipe from the top of the stove or occasionally in the collar of the stove if it is an option offered by the manufacturer. It is used to control the draw through your stove, operating just like a butterfly valve in that it can allow more air or restrict the air flow depending on the position it's left in.

Flue dampers are often used if you are experiencing problems with too much air being drawn from the stove, causing potential overheating issues. The user can choose to restrict the draw and therefore reduce the heat output of the stove

Overall, a damper is not an essential purchase for most people, however if you are looking to achieve overnight burning or reduce airflow through your stove, it's a worthwhile accessory.
