Locate a Chimney Sweep

Locate a Chimney Sweep

Before you purchase or install a new appliance that will be using an existing chimney/flue we recommend you have your chimney inspected to identify any possible defects, ensuring it is structurally sound and not leaking. At this stage you should also be advised if your chimney needs lining. You should also have your chimney/flue swept to clean clean any blockages and remove soot that may have built up in your chimney. Your proposed installer should be able to carry out both of these processes, or you can hire a professional chimney sweep. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) regulates the work of all registered sweeps and maintains a high standard of work and knowledge. You can use the link below to open the NACS website and search for a sweep in your area.

It also lists in its Official Guide, factory made chimneys and carbon monoxide detectors and alarms suitable for use with solid fuel. Gas Appliance Installation

Gas Appliance Installation

As of 1st April 2009 all gas engineers undertaking installation or servicing work in England, Scotland and Wales should be registered on the new Gas Safe Register.

Gas Safe Register is the National Watchdog for Gas Safety in the United Kingdom. Before instructing an installer to carry out any work in your home, ask to see their ID card. The card contains a photograph of the operative, their employer's trading title and the Gas Safe Register logo. The reverse of the card contains details of the different types of gas work the operative is competent to undertake. You can use the link below to open the Gas Safe Register website.

Oil Appliance Installation

Oil Appliance Installation

The installation of oil burning appliances should be carried out by an OFTEC registered installer.

All OFTEC installers are trained at approved centres and assessed. They are appropriately insured and carry an identity card which details the area of work they are qualified to carry out. OFTEC installers are able to self certify their work, removing the need to notify Local Authority Building Control when installing a new oil appliance.

We suggest you obtain at least three quotes from different companies, who have suitable qualifications to carry out the installation you require. Prices do vary greatly, but remember, the cheapest is not always the best - Ask for references or pictures of previous work if you are unsure.
